If you’re a woman suffering from hair loss, the cause may be due to a hormonal or dietary imbalance.

The first step is to test hormone levels including estrogen, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and cortisol to determine if your hair loss is due to hormonal imbalance. The second step is to identify whether your diet is sufficient in nutrients that promote hair health.

Hormonal imbalance can be caused by different situations including:

1. Excessive stress levels. When you are stressed out, the blood vessels in your scalp constrict reducing the amount of nutrition and blood flow that reaches the scalp, which can lead to hair loss. Concentrate on alleviating accumulated stress. Having a lot of stress will also speed up any hair loss that you currently have. Check out my article HERE on how to reduce stress using nutrition.

Another effective hair loss treatment is meditation because meditation reduces stress and relaxes your body and mind.

2. Hormonal imbalance can also be caused by lack of sleep. When you lack sufficient sleep cortisol production increases which also leads to hair loss. See my article here on the Importance of Sleep for Health and Weight Loss HERE

3. Hormonal imbalance is also caused by excessive caffeine or alcohol intake. Too much of these will destabilize the endocrine system.

4. Hormonal imbalance is also caused also by excess visceral fat. See my article on Why It Is Important To Lose Belly Fat Fast and How To Do This The Right Way HERE

5. Furthermore, certain hormone replacement therapies also cause hormonal imbalances. If you have noticed some thinning of your hair, take a look at any relatively new medications or therapies you have begun that may be leading to hormonal imbalance.

Dietary causes of hair loss include:

1. Vitamin D deficiency

Researchers at Cairo University found that women who were experiencing hair loss also had lower levels of vitamin D2—and hair loss only got worse as the levels dropped. They suggest that vitamin D may regulate the expression of genes that promote normal hair follicle growth.

2. Low levels of Iron also lead to hair loss because of the involvement of iron in certain enzymatic processes. Low levels of iron have been shown to inhibit an enzyme that is associated with hair growth in mice. Iron is found in sufficient quantities for health in beans, dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and in dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots.

3. Omega 3 fatty acid deficiency. Omega 3 fatty acid rich foods have been shown to help make your hair healthier. You can find omega 3 fatty acids in their healthiest form for human consumption in walnuts, flax seeds, and chia seeds.

4. Iodine Deficiency. Another essential mineral for healthy hair is iodine. Iodine is an essential trace mineral that is crucial for the thyroid to function properly. Lack of sufficient iodine in the diet will lead to thyroid hormone imbalances. Ensure you get sufficient iodine by consuming iodine rich foods such as sea vegetables including Kelp, Hiziki, Kombu, and Wakame. Kelp has the highest amount of iodine of any food on the planet, and just one serving offers four times the daily minimum requirement. You can also take kelp in tablet form. Cranberries are another great source of iodine. About 4 ounces of cranberries contain your daily minimum requirement of 500/mcg of iodine. I recommend buying fresh organic berries. If you choose to buy cranberry juice, make sure it has little or no sugar added.

5. Vitamin C is also essential for hair health. Vitamin C is essential for producing collagen, which is needed to keep hair alive and healthy. Vitamin C is also involved in the production of the amino acid tyrosine, and tyrosine is important for the maintenance of the structural integrity of hair strands and the cells of hair follicles. Vitamin C is also a potent antioxidant which can contribute to its ability to encourage hair regrowth as it promotes skin health and prevents oxidative damage to the cells of hair follicles. Ensure you receive enough vitamin C by regularly consuming bell peppers, dark leafy greens, kiwifruit, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peas, and papayas.

6. B12 is an important vitamin for hair growth. Cells need to divide constantly to produce new hair, a process that requires vitamin B12. You can find B12 in many sources. You can take a B12 supplement, preferably in the form of METHYLCOBALAMIN, or you can absorb it through a little meat consumption.

7. Phytosterols are plant-derived sterols that are similar in structure to human cholesterol and can help with hormonal imbalances. Foods with high levels of phytosterols are soy, lettuce, sesame seeds, asparagus, sunflower seeds, okra, cauliflower, grapefruits, almonds, macadamia nuts, and brussels sprouts. Herbs rich in phytosterols include roots of Dong Quai, ginseng, wild yam, black cohosh, dandelion; flowers of hops, yarrow, red clover; leaves of stinging nettle, sage, berries, and fenugreek.

A great way to boost blood flow to your hair roots is to massage the hair roots for at least two minutes daily. This can help prevent hair loss because the increased blood flow is good for stimulating the hair follicles. You can massage the scalp either in the morning when you first wake up, at night before you go to bed, or even in the shower.

Using lime juice and coconut oil to massage your scalp periodically can also slow the process of hair loss not only due to increased blood flow but also the vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and along with lime juice help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles.

Losing your hair can be a source of emotional stress for anybody. Getting to the root cause of the problem is the key to getting the problem solved.
