The #1 Reason Why Obesity Is So Prevalent In The US And How To Stop Its Health Toll

Let’s look at why obesity is so prevalent in the US in comparison with other countries and how we can stop it from increasing and taking its health toll.

First lets look at some numbers so that we really understand the current situation:

An analysis published in the Lancet in May 2016 examined 1,749 published studies on weight from around the world. The analysis showed that the United States holds the highest number of overweight and obese people in the world. In the United States, 70.9 percent of men and 61.9 percent of women are overweight or obese, compared to 38 percent of men and 36.9 percent of women worldwide. It’s almost double!

According to the Trust for America’s Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the most recent health data shows that adult obesity rates (BMI over 30) now exceed 35 percent in four states and is 30 percent in 25 states and is above 20 percent in all the other states. Moreover, 30 percent of high school students are overweight in the US.

So, what is the reason for this? It is not that we Americans like to eat more than other nations or that we are lazier. This kind of behaviour is prevalent all over the world. It is also not that food is cheaper in the US so we just eat more. No!

As a nutritionist and medical scientist with experience with global populations I think it boils down to two factors:

  1. High Fructose Corn Syrup
  2. Lack of Education

But wait, before you go criticising these factors, let’s take a look at each one of them more closely and how a person can change their health destiny just by following some simple health promoting guidelines.

1.High Fructose Corn Syrup

The reason I chose high fructose corn syrup as my first factor is not for the same reasons you tend to hear from others advocating against this sweetener. There is much news about the ill effects of high-fructose corn syrup but most of these sources are not based on real facts or research that really looks into the consumption of high fructose corn syrup or its metabolic effects. In fact, high-fructose corn syrup has a very similar composition to plain sugar with regard to fructose and glucose levels. (see table below).

Research in the past examined 100% fructose and compared it to sugar. Fructose is metabolized differently than glucose and is rapidly taken up by the liver; this has been shown to lead to certain metabolic anomalies. But high-fructose corn syrup is not made of 100% fructose. It is named high fructose corn syrup because of normal corn syrup there is no fructose whatsoever. As a matter of fact, high-fructose corn syrup has a similar proportion of fructose and glucose as plain sugar has, and therefore this type of research is irrelevant. There are currently no populations consuming a purely fructose based diet in the world today. This pretty much takes away all of the research that points to the metabolic differences between high-fructose corn syrup and plain sugar because there is essentially no metabolic difference between the two.

However, there is still a reason that I think that high-fructose corn syrup is a major contributor to obesity rates in the United States and the reason is where high-fructose corn syrup comes from:

You see, plain sugar comes from sugar cane or sugar beets, whereas high-fructose corn syrup comes from corn. This is a very important difference from an economic perspective. Sugar is mainly grown in equatorial regions of the world, which are also known for unstable political and/or climatic conditions causing the price of sugar to fluctuate dramatically in response to these factors. Corn, on the other hand, is a grown in the US and is a dependable, renewable, and abundant resource. Therefore, there are no price or availability fluctuations for this sweetener. This makes high-fructose corn syrup overall a cheaper sweetener than plain sugar. High-fructose corn syrup is also manufactured directly as a liquid, making its use more easy in comparison to the use of granulated sugar which needs first to be dissolved in water before it can be used in most foods.

For these reasons, high-fructose corn syrup is so attractive and so popular with American food manufacturers. It is added to practically everything since it is cheap and just like plain sugar it adds sweetness which we love from an evolutionary standpoint and it adds a great mouthfeel to foods just as plain sugar does. High-fructose corn syrup added to processed foods, provide colligative properties, moisture control, better structure, adds bulk, and a more tempting color just as plain sugar does.

In the United States, adding high-fructose corn syrup to processed foods in such a cheap and attractive manner has made it so prevalent. This leads the American population to receive a lot more unnecessary calories from high-fructose corn syrup without it providing any nutritional value. When the food we consume provides no nutritional value, we stay hungry and look for something more to eat to provide our nutritionally starving body with what it really needs: nutrients.

This leads to overeating, and this is where the second factor that has caused so many Americans to follow the path to obesity comes in.

2. Lack of Education

The most amazing thing that I love about the United States is that you can find everything of everything in plentitude. It is a capitalistic country and therefore the driving force is the success and monetary gain. No problem with that, however, we, at times, seem to forget this fact and allow the media to help us make decisions on what is best for our health based on what is really best for the companies advertising. We get our knowledge from biased sources that do not have our health as their top priority.

People need to take personal responsibility for their own circumstances including their health condition. The companies making monetary gain by selling processed foods rich with tasty high-fructose corn syrup are taking responsibility for their own financial situation, but on the other hand, you are the one who needs to take responsibility for your personal health situation by making wiser choices. Reading and learning more about food is extremely important towards leading to a healthier lifestyle.

  15. Get plenty of sunlight or consume foods rich in vitamin D, especially as you age.
